Public Relations Seder. (2022 - present)

A participatory, Passover-style event to recount how the field of Public Relations stole theater away from artists.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This participatory event tells the story of the origin of PR (and with it the rise of commercialism) a hundred years ago. A broad spectrum of communities have suffered as a result of this capitalist form of mass persuasion, and which uses covert theater techniques to alter our sense of reality. (This is the topic of Nic's dissertation.) PR Seder borrows from the Jewish practices associated with the Passover holiday, when people eat a meal, tell the ancient story of exodus (about the Jews’ escape from bondage), and have lively discussions. And traditionally each person is supposed to drink 4 glasses of wine. This is the starting place for PR Seder, which takes the form of a Haggadah, or script to be read aloud around the circle, which we respectfully repurpose as a genre of pedagogical performance.

OUTPUTS:

  • An event that tells the story of PR from the perspective of artists.

  • A Hagaddah that can be activated by small groups of individuals anywhere in the world.

CREATIVE PROCESS:

  • August 2022 – First workshop.
